Lighting Installation
Light fixture installation starts with a licensed electrician
Every LightCove fixture is hardwired, so installation should always be carried out by a licensed electrician who can check your wiring, the electrical box and local code requirements. This guide helps you prepare: where to place each fixture, what to share with your electrician and which details to check before the appointment. It is general guidance, not a wiring tutorial.
Before the installation
Check the ceiling or wall box
The electrical box must be rated to support the fixture. This matters most for chandeliers and larger pendants. Your electrician will confirm whether the box needs to be replaced or braced.
Choose bulbs and a dimmer together
If you plan to use a dimmer, choose dimmable bulbs and a dimmer switch that is compatible with those bulbs. Your electrician can fit the dimmer at the same time.
Sloped ceilings
Sloped ceiling kits are available on request for pendants and chandeliers. Tell us the angle of your ceiling before ordering.
Typical mounting heights
These are common starting points. Your designer or electrician will adapt them to your room.
Wall sconces
Wall sconces are usually mounted about 60 to 66 inches from the floor in living areas and corridors. Beside a bed, place them so the light falls on a book rather than in the eyes.
Vanity lights
Vanity lights above a mirror are typically placed about 75 to 80 inches from the floor. Sconces on each side of a mirror are usually set close to eye level, around 60 to 66 inches.
Pendants over tables and islands
Pendant lights over a kitchen island or dining table usually hang 30 to 36 inches above the surface, spaced evenly along its length.
Chandeliers
Over a dining table, a chandelier is usually centered on the table, with its bottom about 30 to 36 inches above it. In a foyer or entryway, keep at least 7 feet of clearance below the fixture, and more in double-height spaces. Browse entryway lighting and dining room lighting for ideas.
Flush mounts
Flush mount ceiling lights fix directly to the ceiling box and suit hallways, bedrooms and lower ceilings.
Caring for brass
Turn the power off and let bulbs cool before cleaning. Dust with a soft, dry cloth. Raw brass develops a natural patina over time.
